Carrie Is a Dancing Queen: Linzi Hateley to Join London's Mamma Mia!

By John Nathan
31 Jan 2007

The producers of Mamma Mia! have announced that the new London cast of the hit musical featuring the songs of ABBA will be headed by Linzi Hateley, who made her Broadway debut in the title role of the ill-fated musical Carrie.

The new cast will take to the Prince of Wales Theatre's stage March 5, with Hateley assuming the role of Donna Sheridan.

The new line-up also includes Joanna Monroe as Rosie, Jane Gurnett (who plays Tanya), Iain Fletcher (Sam Carmichael), Steven Finch (Harry Bright), Paul Hawkyard (Bill Austin), Hannah Robertson (Sophie Sheridan), Paul Shelford (Sky), Lucy Miller (Ali), Tanya Robb as (Lisa), Ben Heathcote (Pepper) and Kieran Jae as (Eddie).

Hateley's West End credits include Mary Poppins, Chicago and Les Misérables. Gurnett's stage work includes several seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company and television appearances in “Crossroads,” “Dangerfield” and “The Bill.” Steven Finch appeared in Stephen Daldry’s West End production of An Inspector Calls and was a regular for three years in the British television soap “Brookside.”

Based on the back catalogue of seventies pop group ABBA, Catherine Johnson’s book tells the story of bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan who hopes to discover her father’s identity on the eve of her wedding. She brings three men from her mother Donna’s past back to the Greek island they last visited 20 years previously.

Since the original London production opened in 1999, the show has grossed over $2 billion worldwide.

Mamma Mia! is produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East & Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal.
