Tony Hadley to Make West End Debut in London Chicago

By John Nathan
08 Jan 2007

Tony Hadley, lead singer of the eighties pop band Spandau Ballet, will be the next Billy Flynn in the London production of Chicago.

Hadley, whose career received a boost when he won the TV show "Reborn in the USA," makes his West End stage debut at the Cambridge Theatre on Jan. 29 for an eight-week season finishing on March 24. He takes over from Ian Kelsey as the slick lawyer and joins “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria” contestant Aoife Mulholland as Roxie.

In the reality TV show, Mulholland missed out on the lead role for the London production of The Sound of Music, which was won by Connie Fisher who is currently staring as Maria.

The hit production of Chicago, which opened at the Adelphi Theatre on Nov. 18, 1997, moved to the Cambridge Theatre in April 2006, allowing the current revival of Evita to move into the Adelphi.

The Cambridge Theatre hosted the first production of Chicago when it opened there in April 1979, running for 603 performances. The John Kander (music) and Fred Ebb (lyrics) musical premiered on Broadway in 1975, features such songs “All That Jazz” and “Mister Cellophane,” and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse.

The current London production also features Annette McLaughlin as Velma Kelly, Julian Sims as Amos Hart and Brenda Edwards as Mamma Morton.

For more on Chicago, which is booking until Oct. 6, 2007, call (0)870 890 1102.
