London Phantom to Celebrate 20th Anniversary in October

By Andrew Gans
24 Aug 2006

The London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera will mark another milestone this fall.

On Oct. 9 the hit musical will celebrate its 20th anniversary at Her Majesty's Theatre. That performance, according to the Really Useful website, will be followed by an onstage champagne toast and the cutting of a 20th anniversary cake.

A limited number of tickets are available for the special performance by calling 0870 890 1106.

The Phantom of the Opera made its world premiere on October 9, 1986, at Her Majesty's Theatre in London with a cast that included Michael Crawford in the title role and Sarah Brightman as Christine Daae. Based on the novel "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" by Gaston Leroux, Phantom features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe). The book is by Richard Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber. Hal Prince directed in London and Manhattan.

Phantom, which continues to play the Majestic Theatre in New York, became Broadway's longest-running show on Jan. 9.
