Back to Sleep, Odets: Tony-Winning Awake and Sing! Ends Run on Broadway

By Robert Simonson

Lincoln Center Theater's Bartlett Sher-directed production of Clifford Odets' Awake and Sing! will end its extended run at the Belasco Theatre on June 25.

The staging won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. It won a second Tony Award for Catharine Zuber's costumes.

Prior to its Tony wins, the show extended its run by two weeks to June 25. The play officially opened at the Belasco on April 17, after previews from March 24. The revival received eight Tony nominations.

The cast features Mark Ruffalo as the striving wise guy Moe, Ben Gazzara as righteous Marxist grandpa and Zoe Wanamaker as the fretfully materialistic mother. Also living in the play's stifling Bronx apartment building are Lauren Ambrose and Pablo Schreiber as Wanamaker's two children, Ned Eisenberg as capitalist Uncle Morty, Jonathan Hadary as Wanamaker's "failure" husband, Peter Kybart and Richard Topol.

The classic American play first staged in the Depression by The Group Theatre is seen at the Belasco Theatre, where the drama originally opened in 1935. The production celebrates the playwright's centenary.
