AD: Affordable Playwriting Classes

The Acting Studio - New York

Beginning & Advanced Playwriting Classes at the renowned

The Acting Studio - New York taught by Anne Phelan.

Playwriting 1 students begin by writing monologues, then they progress to scenes and short plays. Each class consists of discussing a short play (themes, structure, images, etc.); reading students’ work; and in-class writing and listening exercises.

Topics include character, theatricality, dialogue, setting, images, actions and obstacles, and using other art forms (photography, music, painting) to spur creativity. By the end of the class, each student has completed several monologues and/or short plays.

A selection of these plays are cast with actors from Chelsea Rep LAB at The Acting Studio, Inc. and assigned a director, allowing each student playwright to go through the rehearsal process with their script in preparation for a public reading at the Studio. Many scripts go on to be produced by Chelsea Rep LAB in their festival of new plays.

Playwriting 2 students work to complete a one-act (approximately 30 minutes) play, or part of a full-length play. Students should plan on spending five hours each week outside of class for reading and writing. Everyone is expected to bring in work for each class. Students are welcome to take the advanced class as many times as they choose: its purpose is to generate new work in a supportive and professional atmosphere. Advanced class veterans have had plays in both the Strawberry One-Act Festival and the NY International Fringe Festival.

The beginning class meets once a week for 10 weeks; the advanced class meets once a week, every other week for 10 weeks.
