Acclaimed film and theater director, GARRY MARSHALL, directs MIKE BENCIVENGA's new play, BILLY & RAY, a whip-smart comedy charting the birth of the film noir genre. BILLY & RAY follows the literary odd couple, writer-director Billy Wilder and novelist Raymond Chandler, as they contentiously collaborate to adapt “Double Indemnity” for the silver screen. Set in 1940's Hollywood, BILLY & RAY is the true story of how two brilliant and thorny artists battled the Hollywood censors and each other to create a groundbreaking movie classic.
Male, to play 35 to early 40s, iconic Hollywood writer/director by way of Vienna - slight Austrian accent. Always restless, hyper, funny, confident, womanizer who truly enjoys his martinis. Must have incredible comic chops and brilliant timing.
Male, to play 50s, legendary mystery writer famous for detective fiction. An American schooled in England, slightly pale, well-educated and buttoned-up, he wears tweed, smokes a pipe and secretly sneaks whiskey from a flask. Has a dryness and stillness very much in contrast to Billy’s hyperactivity, but must have equally incredible comic chops and comic timing within that stillness.
Male, to play mid-late 30s, Producer for Paramount Pictures, slick, solid producer-type, dapper, well-groomed, a worrier with the studio watching his every move. A city guy from Chicago, with much time spent in the New York literary and theatre world.
The following role has been CAST. Those auditioning will be considered for possible replacements if needed:
[CAST]: Female, to play 20s, Billy Wilder's "Girl Friday" secretary, a no nonsense gal - think Rosalind Russell, Eve Arden or Jean Arthur. She is 1940's chic, stylish, a fast talker and has her pulse on the beat of the studio and Wilder's every need.
