Inside Track: The Weekend and Week Ahead (July 4 Edition)

By Blake Ross
03 Jul 2009

Besides burgers, beers and BBQ, the weekend and week ahead will be filled with some Boys from Jersey, a grand diva named Aretha and some high kicking kids from the West Side.

Happy Birthday America!
Blake

Friday, July 3

GO→ If you're planning on staying in the Big Apple for the July 4th holiday weekend, make sure you take advantage of the lighter-than-usual traffic in the city and go see a show! Here is the performance schedule on The Great White Way over the holiday weekend.

GO→ What is more American than talking about losing your virginity?! My First Time has made a whole show outta the topic. Starting Friday, they will add some new (funny as long as it didn't happen to you) material. (10 PM, New World Stages, tickets)

Saturday, July 4

WATCH→ The JULY 4th EDITION

→NYC: Macy's sure knows how to throw a party! The Hudson River will be set ablaze with fireworks galore. Some great voices will be on hand to provide the glorious soundtrack. This year, the cast of West Side Story will sing alongside Jewel and Rob Thomas. (9PM on NBC)

→DC: Broadway stars and big belters have been a big part of PBS' "A Capitol Forth" ever since its inception 29 years ago. This year is no exception. The cast of Jersey Boys, Michael Feinstein, Barry Manilow and Aretha Franklin are all set to perform live on the Capitol's West Lawn. (8PM on PBS)

→BOSTON: Neil Diamond will perform with the Boston Pops as fireworks explode over the Charles River. (10 PM on CBS)

Sunday, July 5

BEFORE THEY CLOSE→ Two of Off-Broadway's limited engagements will come to an end this Sunday. They are…

Coraline: The creepy fantasy book turned creepy claymation film turned fantastic (but still creepy) musical will end its run on Sunday. (MCC Theatre, 121 Christopher Street, tickets)

The Wiz: The Wiz is born again thanks to the talented young cast and artistic team that gave new life to this classic. (New York City Center, 130 West 56th Street, tickets)

Monday, July 6

SHE'S BAAACK→ One of Avenue Q's originals, Ann Harada, will return to the not-made-for-kids puppet musical. (Golden Theatre, 252 West 45th Street, tickets)

Tuesday, July 7

OFF AND RUNNING→ Chicago is now officially the new Law and Order—everyone gets a shot! This time, it's Samantha Harris' turn. Harris is host of the hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars"...but who knew she could actually dance herself? Well, she'll have to prove it now that she has signed on to play Roxie Hart for a six-week engagement (Ambassador Theatre, 219 W. 49th St., at Broadway, tickets)

Wednesday, July 8

GO→ Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park gets a downtown makeover when it moves to the Manhattan Theatre Source. (Through July 25, 177 MacDougal St. between Waverly and West 8th Street, tickets)

Thursday, July 9

GO→ Broadway moves a bit east for Broadway in Bryant Park, a series of free outdoor concerts featuring songs from some of the biggest shows on Broadway. On Thursday cast members from Phantom of the Opera, STOMP, Avenue Q and In the Heights will all perform. What a way to spend a lunch break! (12:30-1:30 PM in Bryant Park, tickets)
