Inside Track: The Week Ahead, June 15-June 21

By Blake Ross
15 Jun 2009

School's out for summer! Which means—you better find stuff to keep your kids entertained and FAST! This installment of Inside Track's The Week Ahead features some brothers named Jonas, kids performing for kids, and high-flying acrobats who are sure to keep your little ones entertained…for a little while at least.

Monday, June 15

GO→ Audra McDonald, Betty Buckley, Bebe Neuwirth and Kelli O'Hara will perform a very special, one-night-only benefit concert for The Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative. And the best part? Our very own man of fabulousness, Seth Rudetsky, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies! (7:30 PM, New World Stages, 340 W. 50th St., call 212-221-7300, ext, 133 for tickets).

Tuesday, June 16

LOOK→ To celebrate Lincoln Center's 50th Anniversary, two shopping Meccas, Bergdoff Goodman and the Time Warner Center, will exhibit photos and painting retrospectives in tribute to the famed arts institution. Enjoy them for free—possibly the only thing Bergdoff and Time Warner will ever give away for free, except for oxygen. (Bergdoff's at 57th and 5th Ave., Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle).

Wednesday, June 17

GO→ If you share my sick sense of humor, you will appreciate the delicious irony of Kevin Smith performing on one of the most hallowed stages in all of show business, Carnegie Hall. Read what I think is a pretty funny interview with Smith from New York Mag. If you don't find it funny (especially his answer to how he feels about performing at said Hall), then you should stay home. (8 PM, Carnegie Hall, 7th Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets, tickets).

GO (FOR KIDS)→If you're looking for a more PG-rated evening, check out Out of Whack: The All-Kids Rock Musical Workshop at the Theatre for the New City. The whole show was conceived, produced and is performed by kids ranging from ages 9-19. Plus, tickets are only $15. (8 PM, 155 First Ave., btwn. 9th and 10th Streets; call or email for tickets, 201- 567-6664, Matt@BlackBoxArts.com).

Thursday, June 18

OFF AND RUNNING→ City Center Encores! production of The Wiz will officially open on Thursday (previews began on the 12th). Songstress Ashanti, Orlando Jones and the powerhouse that is Tony Award winner LaChanze all star. (Through July 5, City Center, at 130 W. 55th Street between 6th and 7th Aves., call 212-581-1212 for tickets).

Friday, June 19

GO (FREE)→ Did your kids throw a fit because they missed the free "Good Morning America" Jonas Brothers concert this past week? Do not fear! The Bros. will be performing another freebie, this time courtesy of the "Today Show." (arrive at 6 AM, 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza, btwn. 5th and 6th Aves).

Saturday, June 20

WATCH→ If Karen Olivo's kick-ass Tony win this past weekend got you craving more West Side Story, Ovation TV will air "West Side Memories," a documentary about the classic stage and film versions featuring interviews with Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents and Hal Prince. (7 PM on Ovation TV, see a preview here).

Sunday, June 21

BEFORE IT CLOSES→ Last chance to check out the bizarro circus extravaganza that is Cirque Du Soleil's Kooza. (tickets).

GO→ One of our favorite events of the year is Broadway Bares, when all the hotties from Broadway bare their tushies to raise big bucks for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Naked fundraising…is there a better time? I think not. (9:30 PM and midnight, Roseland Ballroom, tickets).
