PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Jessica Hynes

By Ernio Hernandez
20 May 2009

Jessica Hynes
Jessica Hynes

Jessica Hynes — a 2009 Tony Award nominee for her work in The Norman Conquests — fills out Playbill.com's questionnaire with random facts, backstage trivia and pop culture tidbits.

Full given name: Tallulah Jessica Elina Stevenson (That's my given maiden name) Jessica Hynes is my married name and the one I use now.
Hometown: Brighton
Audition monologue: Hermione from A Winter's Tale "Sir, spare your threats...."
Special skills: Roller blading
How you got the nomination news: I called back a missed call and someone said, "Congratulations..."
Nominee you're most excited for: My fellow actors in the Normans; we're all rooting for each other.
Who you are taking Tony night: Amelia Bullmore, who plays Ruth my sister in the show.
Person you'll forget to thank: Jessica my gorgeous wardrobe siren, and Pat in front of house who puts me in a good mood everyday on my way in.
First Broadway show ever saw: This is my first time in New York - I've never been to a Broadway show! My kids went to Shrek though, and they loved it.
If you could go back in time and catch any Broadway show, what would it be? I'd like to have seen Judy Garland in anything.
Current show you have been recommending to friends: God of Carnage, Shrek
Favorite show tune: "Make 'em Laugh" [Singin' in the Rain]
Most played song on your iPod: B.B. King "Better Not Look Down"
Last book you read: Philip Roth "My Life as a Man"
Must-see TV show: "The Sopranos," "Seinfeld"
Performer you would drop everything to go see: Aretha Franklin
Pop culture guilty pleasure: Madonna
First stage kiss: Kissed Azdak in Youth Theatre production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle - had a massive crush on him and looked forward to it every night.
Favorite post-show meal: A juicy steak; New York has the best steak I have ever tasted.
How you got your Equity card: I was 19 and in the middle of rehearsals for a play and the Equity [rep] pulled me aside and gave me a telling off for not applying, as I was fully eligible and had been working without one for a year!
Worst onstage mishap: I fell off the back of the stage during a production of Fiddler on the Roof. For some reason that night the action had shifted up stage and consequently I was closer to the edge. I fell right off, leaving a small boy behind, but I scrambled to my feet and raced back onstage in time to come in with 'The Mommas! The Mommas..'
Worst costume ever: They've all been pretty bad.
Who would play you in the movie? Amy Poehler. With a comically bad British accent.
Worst job you ever had: Working as a cleaner in a Christian Mountain Centre. I had to fish out pubes from plugholes and then have compulsory group prayer meetings.
TV or commercial gig you most enjoyed: Making "Spaced," which I created and co-wrote with Simon Pegg.
Leading lady role you've been dying to play Funny Girl
