PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Anika Noni Rose

Anika Noni Rose — who co-stars in the current Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof — fills out Playbill.com's questionnaire with random facts, backstage trivia and pop culture tidbits.

Full given name: Anika Noni Rose
Hometown: Bloomfield, CT
Zodiac sign: Virgo
Audition monologue: Whatever works for that particular audition. I don't have monologues just sitting, available in my mind's back pocket. I admire people who can do that - who can just whip out "To be or not to be" at a party....I don't want to hear it, but I do admire it.
Special skills: I can speak in different dialects, and I can pick up languages pretty quickly. I can do inventive tongue curls, make my eye look like it's wandering, and play like a child!
First Broadway show ever saw: The Wiz
Current show you have been recommending to friends: Passing Strange and In the Heights
Favorite show tune: "Be a Lion," "Don't Rain on My Parade," "With Every Breath I Take," "Simple Joys," "I Loves You Porgy," "If I Could Feel," "The President is Dead," "Climb Every Mountain," "No Bad News." Ok, the whole original Broadway recording from The Wiz...there are so many songs!
MAC or PC? Mac all day! (But pissed that my Flip Ultra doesn't wish to be compatible. It's '08, people, make it work!!!)
Most played song on your iPod: Jill Scott's "Hate on Me"
Last book you read: Either "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz, or Pete Hamill's "North River," both of which I loved.
Last good movie you saw: "Juno"
Favorite board/card game: Cranium
Performer you would drop everything to go see: Ledisi
Pop culture guilty pleasure: Every now and then I bop down the street (hard!) to "Wake me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham!
First stage kiss: I was Muriel in Ah, Wilderness! and had a sweet/very chaste kiss with my leading man.
Favorite pre-show meal: As long as it's good food, I don't care, but lately I've had a hankering for the teriyaki chicken (with coconut rice instead of potatoes) from Ruby Foos. If it's pre-show, my buddy Zach makes sure it comes to the table quick and hot!
How you got your Equity card: I got my Equity card in Robert O'Hara's Insurrection: Holding History at the Geary Theater. Embarrassingly, I got it again for Cat, because after traveling the damn globe for a year, a few things lapsed on me...oops.
Worst flubbed line/missed cue/onstage mishap: Well, in Caroline, or Change I was supposed to sing "..and cicadas in the pecan trees.." However, on this particular day I lent angelic tone to "..and tomatoes in the pecan trees.." By the time I got back to my dressing room at intermission, there were three perfectly ripe tomatoes, on the vine, sitting on my dressing room table. (*see attached evidence) [below]
Worst costume ever: I've been lucky so far...maybe what I wore in Eli's Comin'.
Cats or dogs? Cats.
Favorite cereal: Raisin Nut Bran, although I'm now allergic to nuts, and I think it's been discontinued.
Worst job you ever had: In college, I was a greeter at Bennigans, which lasted about three weeks. I got nice tips, but had to share them and couldn't stand going home smelling like monte cristo. Not cute.
What leading lady role have you been dying to play? I've always wanted to play Cleopatra in either stage or film. I am a great fan of Elizabeth Taylor, and she was beautiful in the film, but she sure didn't grow up near the Nile River. Can you imagine the sunburn?
*A gift from Anika Noni Rose's Caroline, or Change cohorts.
