Diversifying 1776: “The Present Doesn’t Look Like a Bunch of White People”

Directed by Garry Hynes, the limited engagement features choreography by Chris Bailey and musical direction by Ben Whiteley.



The cast of the musical, which concerns how the Founding Fathers drafted the Declaration of Independence, is headed by John Behlmann (Thomas Jefferson), Nikki Renée Daniels (Martha Jefferson), André De Shields (Stephen Hopkins), Santino Fontana (John Adams), Alexander Gemignani (Edward Rutledge), John Larroquette (Benjamin Franklin), Christiane Noll (Abigail Adams), Bryce Pinkham (John Dickinson) and Jubilant Sykes (Richard Henry Lee) with Terence Archie, Larry Bull, Macintyre Dixon, John Hickok, John Hillner, Kevin Ligon, John-Michael Lyles, Laird Mackintosh, Michael McCormick, Michael Medeiros, Wayne Pretlow, Tom Alan Robbins, Robert Sella, Ric Stoneback, Vishal Vaidya, Nicholas Ward and Jacob Keith Watson.



The Tony-winning musical was written by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone, 1776 opened on Broadway March 16, 1969, and ran for 1,217 performances.
